Robert Hinshelwood

Psychoanalyst, together with Herta Reik he founded the low-fee West London Psychotherapy Clinic to help people on a long NHS waiting list for treatment, former Clinical Director of the Cassel Hospital and Professor of Psychoanalysis at the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies at Essex University (1997). His interests include clinical psychoanalysis, application of psychoanalysis to social sciences; psychoanalytic ethics, epistemology and methodology of psychoanalytic studies; therapeutic communities; group dynamics; history of psychoanalysis. Author of many articles and books (What Happens in Groups (1987), A Dictionary of Kleinian Thought (1989-91), Clinical Klein (1993), Therapy or Coercion (1997), Thinking about Institutions (2001), Suffering Insanity: Psychoanalytic Essays on Psychosis (2004)). He edited two collections of influential papers from the 1920s and 1940s. Editor of the Journals: British Journal of Psychotherapy; Psychoanalysis and History; International Journal of Therapeutic Communities

 

Full Member of the British Psychoanalytical Society. He has founded the International Journal of Therapeutic Communities (now Therapeutic Communities) in 1980 for the Association of Therapeutic Communities (now merged with the Charterhouse Group of Therapeutic Communities to form TCTC - The Consortium of Therapeutic Communities).
